Effectiveness of Flu Vaccine | Video

Amy Fox | 2/25/2013

With the influenza outbreak all across the United States, many are relying on flu shots to avoid the bug. But, how effective is the vaccine?

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control the shot was effective in only 56 percent of people who got the shot and failed mainly to protect those 65 years and older.

As Trinity Health Dr. Casmiar Nwaigwe explains, not everyone who gets the vaccine is protected. When we age, our immune systems weaken and we have no immune response. But, there is another option available to fight off the flu.

"The FC licensed what they call Fluzone High-Dose, which is a higher dose of the influenza vaccine that`s being given to older adults people who are 65 years or older,” said Nwaigwe.

Trinity Health still has flu vaccines available.
