Cease and Desist Ordered Against Medical Device Solicitors

| 2/21/2013

North Dakota’s Attorney General issued a Cease and Desist Order today against businesses that were selling medical devices over the phone. According to Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem’s office, orders were issued against Michael Hilgar of Florida, and Elite Information Solutions, Inc. and Worldwide Info Services, Inc., for alleged violations of consumer fraud and do-not-call laws, and for failure to respond to a Civil Investigative Demand.

According to Stenejem’s office, the businesses sell medical alert devices and monitoring services over the phone. The businesses claim that the individual gets a free medical alert system, but has to pay a monthly fee for the monitoring service. Stenejem says that the companies were allegedly making calls to people on the do-not-call list and were using technology to make it look like the phone calls were local.

Consumers who would like to file a complaint against these solicitations can contact the Attorney General’s office or Consumer Protection at 701-328-3404 or www.ag.nd.gov.
