Oil Tax Bill | Video

Jennifer Joas | 2/20/2013

Oil taxes are a hot button issue this legislative session. Today the Appropriations Committee reviewed a bill that would cut oil taxes in 2017 by two percent. Supporters of the bill say the bill evens itself out, because it changes the stripper well criteria, so oil wells need to individually qualify for tax exemptions if they don`t produce much oil.

But opponents disagree with cutting oil taxes.

"If you recall a couple of years ago the bus toured the state trying to lower the tax rate somehow. And there was no big ground swell of public support for that. And I don`t hear any ground swell of public support now for dropping in 2017 that tax rate of two percent," said Mike Donahue, who opposes the oil tax cut.

The Appropriations Committee did not make a decision on the bill today, because one committee member was missing.
