Xcel Energy Warns of Billing Scam

| 2/7/2013

Xcel Energy says that customers should be aware of people impersonating utility bill collectors. The company says that people are contacting customers, telling them that they have an outstanding bill and they should pay it using a pre-paid cash card purchased at a retail store.

Xcel says that the fake bill collectors often use a fake name, employee number and even can call with a spoofed Xcel phone number.

Other scams include fake bill collectors that try to get the victim’s information over the phone to pay an overdue bill. There are also impersonators that show up at the victim’s home and claim to require payment for a repair to their meter.

Customers should report incidents to Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-4999.
