Keeping your Resolution | Video

Chris Williams | 12/28/2012

Now that the holiday treats are gone, or almost gone, it`s time to think about those resolutions for the new year. One popular resolution is hitting the gym to get back into shape, but for some, the heavy lifting doesn`t last too long.

Anytime Fitness wasn`t terribly busy tonight, but at this time next week it might be hard to find a available machine.

"There is a definite surge in membership after the new year with people making all their New Year’s resolutions. They want to get healthy and get fit," said instructor LeAnne Tracey.

New memberships won`t be the only thing surging next week.

"We also see a surge in cancellations. Because the people from last year who made their resolutions, and didn`t quite make it, they come in. Now that their yearly contract is up, they come in and cancel," Tracey added.

According to a study done by proactivechange.com , after one week of making resolutions, 25 percent of people call it quits. After six months, 54 percent are no longer picking up the weights.

"It`s important to have smart goals as they define them. Smart being: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time sensitive," said health expert Mary Froelich.

Froelich says it`s important to remember to set small goals that lead up to your overall goal. Remaining positive will also help you stay on track.

"There`s a saying that if you think you can or you think you can`t you`re right. However you talk to yourself and if you expect to fail, you`re going to fail."

If you`re new to the gym or if you haven`t worked out in a while, one way to make sure you stick with your plan is coming with a friend for moral support and safety.

"It`s like a group motivating tool. They can work out with other people with similar goals, and after a while, people start to wonder, ‘Where did you start to go?’ And so they tend to come back if they`re in a group," Tracey added.

Tracey says to gradually ease working out into your daily routine.
