“We`re excited to announce today the introduction of our new K-9 dog and handler, Officer Titus Clouse and our new dog Manus Trinity,” police chief Jason Olson said.
Manus Trinity is a 22 month old Belgian Malanois. He and Clouse spent six weeks training in Indiana. They worked at the country’s premiere training school, Vohne Liche Kennels. Manus became a dual-purpose police dog through his time at Vohne Liche.
“He can sniff for drugs and illegal substances. He can also find items like discarded weapons. He can track for people, so a criminal that flees the scene, the dog can help track that person down. We`ve also used him for lost or missing people,” added Olson.
For a growing city like Minot, adding a second K-9 unit was a priority. That`s why Trinity Hospital decided to make a donation towards the purchase of the four-legged officer. “We are honored to partner with the city of Minot and the Minot Police Department to ensure safety in our community. This, after all, is one of our strategic imperatives at Trinity Health. We specifically seek out opportunities like this one to partner with communities that we serve to improve safety and health,” said Trinity President and CEO John Kutch.
It cost Minot $8,000 to purchase Manus and another $5,000 to have him trained. The department also has to pay to have a squad car converted for a K-9 Unit. While Manus wasn’t cheap, K-9s can serve for up to eight years with a police department. Minot PD plans on bringing in another dog to work along Manus when their original K-9, Saber, retires.
Whether it`s sniffing out drugs or tracking down criminals, Minot PD hopes Manus will improve the city`s safety, as he takes a bite out of crime.
