Barack Obama is at the wheel for a second term. Americans have had some time to reflect on the outcome and look to the future. Minot State students agree that informed voters make the difference in a successful Election.

“That`s very important for a democracy is to become very well educated, I think we would definitely invest more in education for people to have critical thinking skills, to be able to look at things and be able to come to a decision themselves,” said MSU student Paul Steig.

But what`s the next step? Where do we go from here? Some North Dakotans say that our system isn`t perfect. Some feel that government officials need to rely on compromise and sacrifice.

“We need to have representatives that aren`t afraid to reach across and work with people of the other party, and they need to realize that by staying on either side and not getting anything done, that`s not helping our country, it`s hurting us more than anything,” said BriAnna Menge.

Jolita Bennett added that it takes more than just compromise. “There`s a lot of talk about compromise, but the thing is not a lot of people realize to compromise you need to sacrifice, so I think that in order for us to get anywhere that the number one thing we have got to look at”.

But for some people, words like compromise and sacrifice go against their beliefs of holding firm to their values and convictions. And it`s this competition of opposing ideas that show up on main-street and in our government, and are a prime example of what the United States represent.
