Stepping into History | Video

Take a look around the Pioneer Village.

Although the calendar may say it`s 2010, this corner of the State Fairgrounds is turning back the clock.

“This village is about historic Minot from 1887 to 1930,” Site Director Dr. J. David Jones says.

There`s the Samuelson House, a home that turns a century old this year. It used to sit downtown near the courthouse.

Speaking of courthouses, there`s the Imperial Ward County courthouse, a look into the late 1800s.

And the other buildings that fill out the village include everything from a school to a church.

“It represents a cross section of what North Dakota is,” Jones says.

And while thousands of people will visit this gateway to the past this week during the fair, keeping the buildings in good shape is a year-round commitment.

“Any kind of work that you could ever imagine doing,” Jones says. “From plumbing to electricity to maintenance to painting to scraping to mowing the lawn to picking up trash.”

Although major restoration and maintenance is done by contractors, unpaid labor is the backbone of the village.

“This place is really maintained by volunteers,” Jones says.

“I really like doing this. I don`t consider this work. It`s more a pleasure to do this,” volunteer Jerry Delzer says.

The efforts not only provide a unique experience at the fair, they also act as a service to the public.

“History`s about the past,” Jones says. “It`s about the future. This village is about where we`ve been. We remember because of who we are.”

So while you`re enjoying the present, you can also enjoy and learn from the past.
