Elementary Chemistry Lesson | Video
Brian Howell

5th Graders at Lincoln Elementary School in Dickinson enjoyed a fun day learning about science. Each year, a Dickinson State University chemistry professor teaches youngsters about how chemicals react, and react they did.

It was a fun-filled, action packed, explosive day for these visiting students. Seeing salts change colors when lit on fire, and electricity making friends` hair stand up, definitely caught the attention of Haley Rodakowski, but her favorite part of the day was a cup of slime. "It`s kind of sticky, and how we got to stir it around ourselves and we could play around with it," said Rodakowski.

Ken Pierce, a DSU chemistry professor, spent the afternoon in his lab teaching the 5th graders about chemical reactions. To them, the old phrase `seeing is believing` took on new meaning. "He kind of explained everything, and, kind of like in class, we just, kind of, read it, and we just get right to the paper, and we study it, and they don`t really explain it to us," said Dillon Brown.

Pierce enjoys trying to get kids interested in science, and is blown away when he sees them smiling and having a good time. "I`ve been doing this for several years now, so I`ve got it down so I can get down to their level and try to explain it so they understand it," said Pierce.

Brown liked watching a dollar bill go up in flames, but he said there are other benefits, too. "We came here at 1:45 p.m. and get out at 3:15 p.m. It`s kind of nice," said Brown.

By coming here, the 5th graders came away with a better appreciation of science. Pierce said the experiments are done in his lab because they would set off fire alarms in grade schools.
