Sanford Health in ND | Video

More competition could be coming to North Dakota`s insurance market. North Dakota regulators have given the OK for Sioux Falls-based Sanford Health Plan to sell health insurance in the state.

Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm says the company still needs to get its insurance products and rates approved. Hamm says it is good news for North Dakota consumers because it will provide more competition. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota dominates the industry, with a market share in the state of almost 90 percent as measured by premium dollars. Hamm says he believes Sanford Health could become a big player in the industry as it is the second largest insurance provider in South Dakota.

"I want them to come in, gain a market share, because like I said, competition won`t just help give the consumer more choices and options, help keep prices down. It also helps keep the competitors honest with each other," said Hamm.
