Shelters in Fort Yates
Anne Kelly
1/25/2010
Hours south of Bismarck, the roads, and weather conditions aren`t much better. Hundreds have been without power in the areas surrounding Fort Yates since Wednesday, and will likely go much longer, as over 8,500 poles have been damaged by high winds. The situation has prompted Standing Rock schools, even Prairie Knights Casino and Resort, to open their doors as a shelter. Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman Charles Murphy says community centers have also opened their doors during this time of need.

"We`ve got about 64 families in one community thats out right now, so it`s been tough all over, it really has. And with the snow blowing and everything else it makes it hard for everyone to get around and try to get help," said Murphy.

Standing Rock Superintendent Terry Yellow Fat says power will likely be out in areas around Fort Yates for up to 21 days.
