University Of Mary Going Overseas | Video

College is the best time to explore the world and expand your horizons and the University of Mary says it wants to help students do that. It`s president Father James Shea`s first initiative come true since his short time in the leadership position: opening a campus in Italy.

The University is deciding between two locations to open a campus next year, one in the heart of Rome, and the other just outside. Father Shea says it`s the perfect way for students to learn how to engage in global discussion.

"They need to have a deeper experience of what it means to not only be citizens of North Dakota or even the United States of America, but to understand that there are global implications now to everything we do in just about every field of study," says Shea.

The program will be designed for Sophomores to spend a semester, or shorter 5 week periods at a campus in Italy to take a few courses in liberal arts and see the culture that is the center of Catholicism. In addition to class work, students will take excursions to Benedictine heritage sites.

"The University of Mary is North Dakota`s only Catholic University, meaning that a proximity to Rome is a helpful thing for us as we deepen our commitment to and our affection for our Catholic identity," says Shea.

The student body president, Tom Seifert, says he speaks for all students when he says he`s excited for the future of the University.

"It`s a great opportunity for the University of Mary and us as students. I think it`s a great way to extend your life-long learning through the University of Mary," says Seifert.

Students will begin their voyage next fall.

Only students in good academic standing will be eligible. Room, board, and tuition will be the same cost in Italy as it is in Bismarck, but students will have to pay for airfare, excursions, spending money.
