The number of HIV and AIDS cases in North Dakota hit a record this year, with as many as 37 cases. Rachel Birk of the Department of Health`s HIV/AIDS program says the state has seen increasingly high numbers for the past three years. But 2009 numbers have been especially high, and the year isn`t over.
"Our state is in a slightly better economic condition than others states, so we have been seeing a lot of people moving into the state with HIV," says Birk. "But we also rolled out our rapid testing at the beginning of the year and since then we`ve seen about a 25% increase in testing, which can also account for the increase in cases."
As part of World AIDS Day today, the Department of Health is urging at-risk people to get tested for HIV. Birk says if you`re wondering if you have HIV, you should consider yourself at risk. Free, confidential testing is available through the state. You can find out more information about testing and services at www.ndhealth.gov/hiv.
