Group Narrows Red River Flood Control Options
11/12/2009
A group studying permanent flood protection for the Fargo-Moorhead area has narrowed its choices to three possible diversion projects along the Red River.

The Metro Flood Study Work Group on Thursday voted to have the Army Corps of Engineers study two diversion options in North Dakota and one in Minnesota. Corps officials say they need a local decision by the end of the year or the project could be delayed for years.

The options include 35,000-cubic-feet per-second diversions on both sides of the river, and a smaller project on the North Dakota side. The final project must meet cost-benefit ratios determined by the corps.

Earlier estimates put the cost of the projects in the range of $1 billion to $1.4 billion.

Group member Brad Wimmer, a Fargo city commissioner, said people are leaning toward a North Dakota diversion as the best option.
