OLLI Sends Adults Back to School | Video

There`s an unexpected group of people who will be heading back to class at Bismarck State College. OLLI is a new program that was so successful in Grand Forks, that it`s now coming to Bismarck. It stand for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and perspective students were able to join on Monday.

Looking around at the crowd of 50-somethings and retirees at the BSC open house, you might think you`re at a high school reunion. But one look at the class registration area is enough to prove otherwise. Believe it or not, these folks are registering for school.

"And most importantly, no grades, no tests, no homework. This is all for fun. Just because you want to learn," notes BSC continuing education program manager Robin Thorstenson.

It`s all part of the OLLI program in the energy center building on the Bismarck State College campus. Over a half dozen humanities classes will be offered in partnership with the University of North Dakota. They`re aimed at the 50-and-over crowd.

Retiree Leona Hartman registered for "theology at the movies" and says, "I was thinking about grandma`s kitchen stories, but a reading list I`m not ready for yet. I`m going to ease my way in."

All of the classes are designed to be interactive and inciteful, and Leona says they`re a great alternative to what she might normally be doing on a lazy afternoon.

"Mainly taking a nap," she says.

But instead, she`ll be learning something new.

Barbara Owens says, "I take great photographs, but I always want to improve."

Barbara decided to sign up for digital photography and "Before the Conductor`s Downbeat", a behind the scenes look at orchestras. She says you`re never too old to learn as long as you take the iniative.

"What`s the phrase? Use it or lose it. It`s fun `cuz this time you don`t have to study," says Barbara.

OLLI classes begin on Monday, September 21.

To register call 1-800-342-8230 or visit www.olli.und.edu/bismarck.
