Changing the way you operate your farm or ranch is a big project, not to mention expensive. But there is a program being kicked off by the Natural Resources Conservation Service that can help. Wayne Markegard joined us this morning to tell us more.
The Dakota Prairies RC&D and Natural Resources Conservation Service are providing technical and financial assistance to the ND Grazing Lands Coalition and their mentorship program.
The Coalition utilizes a number of qualified member-producers to provide one-on-one mentorship to producers (statewide) who are working to implement new grazing and cropping management technologies and strategies into their operations. It focuses is on helping producers to maximize utilization of available sunlight and water to build and improve soil health, reduce inputs, and add systems biodiversity, leading to a more sustainable operation.
Mentors have a solid history of experience in incorporating these strategies into their own production systems. They have worked through many of the frustrations and kinks in this process and are willing to share their experiences and expertise with other producers. Mentor assistance may include topics such as utilizing cover crops, grazing management, utilizing livestock as a management tool, pest management, water development and placement, livestock movement, fencing, monitoring and record-keeping and wildlife management.
This assistance is based on the premise that no two operations are the same, so strategies are tailored to the individual farm or ranch. Dakota Prairies RC&D Council provided assistance on writing and submitting two grant proposals to fund the Coalition activities for the next three years. Both grants were approved.
Producers can contact Dakota Prairies RC&D or the ND Grazing Lands Coalition for information on utilizing this free mentorship service.
